Development of a Robot Arm Based on Preloaded Compliant Structures

Note: Full project documentation is available in German.

Project Overview

This was a project work carried out by 18 people. I led the construction group and also worked hands-on in the design and build process. The project developed a robot arm concept based on preloaded compliant structures, combining numerical modelling, material testing, and design iterations to study how compliant elements can be used as a mechanical motion structure.

Methodology

  • Energy-based modelling of coupled X-structure systems
  • Creep and tensile tests on predeformed samples
  • Implementation of measured material data in Ansys Workbench
  • MATLAB-based rotation and deformation modelling
  • Construction iterations for the final prototype

Technical Focus

The project examines the behaviour of loaded compliant structures over time and under tension, then uses these findings to design a robot arm concept with predictable deformation behaviour and repeatable motion.

Tools & Skills

  • Ansys Workbench
  • MATLAB
  • Experimental Mechanics
  • Compliant Mechanism Design
